So many can never take a sander. At about 1 mm the floor is recoat-only. Hurst Hardwoods and the manufacturer From the Forest both say never sand it. At 3 to 4 mm, sources cluster around two to four sandings. And Kahrs rates its 2-layer and 3-layer floors for three to four.

Can engineered hardwood be refinished? The answer is on a plank edge
An engineered floor is a thin slice of real wood glued to a core, usually plywood or HDF, which is high-density fiberboard. Only that top slice, the wear layer, can ever be sanded. Sand through it and the core shows. And no finish fixes a core. So every question about refinishing engineered hardwood is really one question: how many millimeters of real wood are on top. And how many has the floor already spent?
The spread on the market is wide. Wear layers run 0.6 mm to 4 mm, per Hurst Hardwoods, a flooring retailer. And premium products reach 6 mm: Sustainable Lumber Co builds a 1/4 inch (about 6 mm) wear layer on a 3/4 inch plank. But the same company's read of the mass market is blunt: "Most engineered floors have a fairly thin wear layer, typically 1-2 millimeters." Hurst's quality bar says the best engineered floors have at least 2 mm, with 3 mm most common in high-quality products. Put those together and the honest headline is this: the typical engineered floor sold in the last two decades sits at or below the line where sanding stops being allowed. That is why "can engineered hardwood be refinished" has no one-word answer. And why the classes below matter more than the averages.
The wear layer classes
This table is the page. Find your thickness, read your budget. Counts are the named vendors' claims, reported as ranges because the vendors disagree. And the NWFA's caution sits over all of them: the number of times any floor can be sanded has no fixed answer. It depends on the contractor's skill, the equipment, the wear layer, the flatness, and the floor's condition.

Three construction classes from Kahrs, a major engineered flooring manufacturer, put brand names on the same physics. Its 3-layer floors (15 to 20 mm total) and its glue-down 2-layer floors (9 to 11 mm total) can each be re-sanded three to four times, per the company's own construction page. Its veneer-on-HDF floors, 7 mm total, "should not be re-sanded" at all. That last class is the budget tier across the industry: a wood veneer over a fiberboard core, sold on looks, renewed only by recoating. If your floor clicks together, feels thin underfoot. And cost little, assume this class until a spec sheet says otherwise.
One warning before anyone rents a sander
Sanding a thin engineered floor is not a job to learn on. ReallyCheapFloors, a flooring retailer, states the risk plainly: "Sanding an engineered wood floor with a thin veneer layer (typically 2mm or less) is risky." A sand-through is permanent. The core it exposes cannot be stained, coated, or hidden, and the fix is replacing boards, priced on the repair cost page. This is why the measurement comes before the machine. And why an engineered floor near the line belongs with a contractor rather than a rental drum sander.
The NWFA rules, in plain words
The National Wood Flooring Association is the US trade body for this work. And it defines the two jobs this page keeps separating. A refinish is "sanding a previously finished floor to bare wood and applying new stain or finish." A maintenance coat, also called a recoat, "involves cleaning the existing floor finish, then lightly sanding it. And application of a fresh new coat of wood floor finish." The first cuts to bare wood and spends wear layer. The second only scuffs the old finish and spends none. Every engineered floor, however thin, that holds a sound finish can take the second. Only floors above the line can take the first.
The line itself comes from the NWFA Wood Flooring Sand and Finish Guidelines. In general, if the wear layer is under 2.5 mm (3/32 inch), do not sand the floor. Its Certified Refinishable program sets purchase-time minimums on top of that rule: 3.2 mm (4/32 inch) for unfinished smooth engineered flooring, 2.5 mm (3/32 inch) for factory finished smooth. And 2.5 mm for sculpted or distressed floors, measured at the lowest point of the surface texture. That last detail matters for hand-scraped floors: the budget is whatever wood sits under the deepest scrape, not under the plank face.
The arithmetic behind the 2.5 mm rule
where the number comes from, and why a floor at the line has one sand left
The numbers connect. NOFMA was the flooring makers' body that later merged into the NWFA. It said a sanding should remove less than 1/32 inch of wood. That is under 0.8 mm. The NWFA's benchmark math follows from that figure: an unfinished engineered floor needs a 4/32 inch wear layer because the initial site sand takes about 1/32 inch and leaves about 3/32 inch, equal to the 2.5 mm factory-finished benchmark.
The benchmark is older than the program. The NWFA notes that for the last 20 years a product can only be called "parquet" in Europe, under the FEP definition, if its real wood top layer is at least 2.5 mm thick. And that standardized detail drawings dating to 1916 gave even the thinnest 3/8 inch solid floors 4/32 inch wear layers, enough to sand on site and refinish at least once later. The NWFA also concedes the rounding: 3/32 inch is really 2.381 mm, rounded to 2.5 mm to make the rule easier to communicate.
One consequence worth stating, our arithmetic on the NWFA's two figures: a floor sitting at exactly 2.5 mm has about one full sand left. Removing up to 0.8 mm leaves about 1.7 mm, below the sandability floor, so there is no second sand. A near-limit engineered floor is spending its last refinish, and everything after that is the recoat path. How this budget math plays across floor types is on how many times can floors be refinished.
Finding your number
The homeowner path is paper. The spec sheet or listing from the original purchase states the wear layer, per Buff and Coat Virginia, a refinishing contractor. If the floor came with the house and the paper is gone, the same contractor describes the rest as a professional assessment: determining thickness by examining exposed plank edges near floor vents and transitions, or in rare cases by carefully removing a small piece in a hidden area. Pulling a vent cover to look costs nothing. Reading what you see is the part that takes a trained eye, because the veneer line, the glue line. And the core plies sit millimeters apart.
Two sourced heuristics narrow it while you wait. ReallyCheapFloors pairs plank thickness with veneer: 1/2 inch thick engineered planks typically carry about a 2 mm wear layer, while 3/4 inch planks carry about 6 mm. And the market-share fact from earlier does real work here: since most engineered floors run 1 to 2 mm per Sustainable Lumber Co, the safe default for an unknown floor is the recoat path, not the sander. A contractor who quotes a full sand on an engineered floor without naming its wear layer first is guessing with your floor.
The recoat path, for floors that cannot be sanded
This is the section most engineered floors actually need, and it is not a consolation prize. A recoat renews the surface a floor is walked on. That is where the dullness and the fine scratching live. Two systems do it.
The screen and recoat. A rotary buffer with a fine abrasive screen scuffs the existing finish without cutting into the veneer, then one or two coats of polyurethane go over it, per Buff and Coat Virginia. No measurable wood is removed, so wear layer thickness does not matter. It runs $2 to $4.50 per square foot, our sum of Fixr's separate screening ($1 to $2.50) and recoating ($1 to $2) prices. And takes one day of work plus 24 hours of dry time, per The Flooring Girl, a flooring consultant. The full treatment, including what screening cannot fix, is on screen and recoat.
The chemical recoat. Basic Coatings' TyKote system replaces the screening step with a liquid bonding agent. One thin coat of TyKote bonds the old finish to the new topcoat. Then come one to two coats of StreetShoe, or another approved Basic Coatings waterbased finish, per the TyKote data sheet. The company markets it for prefinished floors, especially hand-scraped ones, where a screen would ride the texture's high spots. Its solutions page states the turnaround: floors recoated one day can be walked on the next.
Both systems share hard exclusions, and they come from the TyKote data sheet and The Flooring Girl's screening list. The chemical system must not be used on floors maintained with paste wax or oil, or worn to the point where bare wood is exposed. Those need a traditional sand and finish, and the data sheet recommends a test patch always. Screening likewise cannot fix deep scratches, color changes, wood grayed by oxidation, or UV discoloration under rugs. And it fails on waxed floors. A color change requires sanding to raw wood, per the same source. That is exactly what a thin wear layer forbids: on a recoat-class floor, the color you have is the color you keep. coverage, dry time, and the working window
From the Basic Coatings technical data sheet, read 2026-08-28: TyKote covers 2,500 to 4,000 square feet per gallon and must be applied at a minimum of 2,500 square feet per gallon, dries in one hour with good ventilation. And the topcoat must follow within six hours or the bonding layer may lose effectiveness. Coverage that thin is normal for a bonding agent rather than a finish. If a quote names a different recoat system, such as a Bona treatment, ask for that system's own data sheet. We could not verify Bona's recoat figures at the source, so this page does not print them.

Read the table against the class table above and the money logic falls out. A recoat-class floor never pays the $3 to $8 rate, because that job is off the table. Its ceiling is $4.50. A sandable engineered floor pays the same rate as solid hardwood. But each sand spends a bigger share of a smaller budget. So the recoat-early strategy pays twice here: it is cheaper per visit and it defers the sand that the floor can only take a few times. The last row is the price of getting the class wrong.

Our recommendation, plainly: when the wear layer is unknown, act like row three until a spec sheet or a contractor's assessment says otherwise. The recoat is cheap, reversible in the only sense that matters (it spends no wood). And it is the correct job for the 1 to 2 mm floors that make up most of the market. The sander is the right tool exactly once the number is known and the number is 2.5 mm or better.
You may not need any of this
Most engineered floors that look tired do not need refinishing at all. The reason: most of what reads as a worn floor is a worn finish. If your floor has no bare wood, no gray, no deep scratches, and no wax history, a screen and recoat at $2 to $4.50 per square foot does the whole job, about half the cost of a full refinish per Inch Calculator, in one day of work plus 24 hours of drying per The Flooring Girl. On a recoat-class floor that is not the budget option. It is the only correct option, and it is also the strategy that stretches a sandable floor's two or three sandings across decades.
